Run, Sam, Run!

Samantha Amend - GB & England Marathon and Ultra Distance Runner

Centurion Thames Path 100 miler – 29th April 2016

by Sam Amend - 29th April 2016 | General News, Race Reports

Well onwards and upwards is my moto and after some disappointingly average races leading upto this including the marathon what would the day unfold?

I haven’t got the experience really of an ultra runner, always said I wanted to be one but knew this was stretching myself.  Having qualified with the Gower 50 miler and then doing the Country to Capital in January for a warm up, It was still another 55 miles to run.

A race Alex and I were due to run together but 6 weeks out knew it would be just me, this however didn’t mean I wasn’t going to run it but tactics would need to change.  I set on recruiting 3 pacers, this changed a few times before 2 weeks out when I enlisted Paul Dineen first 15 miles (Handy Cross Runner & friend), Steve Fell 20 miles (Datchet Dashers) and  Sophie Carter 15 miles (Belgrave Harriers and team mate)  all did a super job at making me smile and keeping me alert on the run.  Then Alex & Jo crewing for the day in the car and dropping my pacers and also supporters i.e. John and Trevor along the last half of the course.

Pleased to say the body held up including running through plantar facitis, knee nigglers, a fall in the last 15 #headtorchinploughedfields  that i stormed home in 2nd overall in a time of 16hrs 9 secs.  this goes down as the fastest ever ladies time and also 2nd overall in the time for Thames Path.  Now time for an easy week and rest and celebrate what is my best achievement yet.
